2020 Germantown Fair
“166th Old Reliable”
Old Reliable Germantown Fair?
Many of you have seen the sign at the fairground, visited our Facebook pages and have seen a fully planned schedule for the Old Reliable on our website. All of that planning and preparation was done prior to the Corona virus pandemic. With the current guidelines in place, there must be a lot of rethinking before we consider opening the gates.
Several folks have asked, “Has there ever not been a Germantown Fair?” The bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 triggered World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt appealed to all citizens and institutions to conserve to the limit on rubber, gas, oil, fats and sugar. For purely patriotic reasons, the Old Reliable was cancelled in 1942 and 1943.
Here it is 2020 and we are faced with a new set of circumstances. Current guidelines for the pandemic require social distancing while recommending face masks be worn any time you cannot social distance coupled with lots of hand washing and sanitizing. The fair board is doing our best to follow the guidance from the KY Department of Agriculture. Mason County Health Department Director, Allison Adams and Emergency Management Director, Clay Buser attended our May meeting. They shared information with us and responded to our many questions.
We have talked with those we contract with for their services, those who volunteer to help us with events, the amusement ride company, the Mason County LIA, the cooperative extension folks, the FFA advisors; the list could go on and on. The rules, regulations and guidelines are a moving target right now. Please know, any decision we make is being done with the utmost consideration for your personal safety. We will decide about whether to have a fair on Thursday, June 25th.
